Area Guides for Coulsdon (1)

Welcome to Coulsdon

Coulsdon is a popular town in Surrey, situated on the southern borders of Greater London.  It has a strong and thriving sense of community whilst being increasingly popular for commuters.  With Coulsdon Town, Coulsdon South and Woodmansterne train stations the area is well served with excellent rail links both into central London, and south to Crawley.   The favoured Thames Link service runs through Coulsdon South making the journey to London Bridge or Gatwick Airport in just 21 minutes!

The M25 and M23 are easily accessible, located just beyond the Coulsdon boundary. There are also several bus routes that run through the town, travelling into Croydon and as far out as Epsom.

You will find a good choice of both state and private schools within the area including Oasis Academy Byron school and Woodcote Primary, both currently rated as Outstanding by Ofsted.

THINGS TO DO

With the panoramic views of London's skyline and wildlife-rich open space and woodland, Farthing Downs and neighbouring Happy Valley and Coulsdon Common make the perfect destinations for countryside walks and family adventures.

You’ll also find the manicured Memorial Gardens with its adventure park, basketball, tennis, cricket, mini-golf and bowling green.  For some light refreshments whilst at the park, Poppy Café is well worth a visit.  Not only can you enjoy organic coffee, ice creams and snacks but you can also relish freshly cooked Thai food.

There’s plenty of sports and leisure options.  From athletics at the South London Harriers, one of the oldest and most successful athletics clubs in the UK, to football, rugby, cricket and bowls clubs. The Coulsdon Martial Arts Club is long established and runs classes for all ages. You will even find a Sports Bar with its own snooker hall in the centre of town.

In and around the area there are a plethora of golf courses.  Coulsdon Manor Golf Club being the most central, set amidst 140 acres of landscaped parkland as part of the Coulsdon Manor Hotel estate.

SHOPS & EATERIES

Coulsdon has a great choice of restaurants, cafes, and pubs, catering to a variety of tastes. Popular options include The Pembroke pub, Toriton Izakaya, a modern Japanese restaurant, and Los Arcos for Spanish Tapas.

The town centre also has a respectable range of local shops including a Post Office, Waitrose and an Aldi, as well as several independent retailers such as a Roomium, an independent homeware store by day, and a Kalm Kafe by night!

LOCAL HISTORY

The original Coulsdon Manor House was built in 1850 and has been tastefully restored to its former glory, and now stands as an elegant and popular hotel and restaurant.

The Coulsdon railway line began its life as a horse drawn ‘Surrey Iron Way’ in 1804 carrying quarried materials and crops.  The London to Brighton passenger railway line then opened in 1841 but remnants of the 1805 railway embankment are still evident.

The London to Brighton veteran car run is the world’s longest-running motoring event with its inaugural run way back in 1896.  The event is a particular highlight of the year as the route heads directly through the centre of Coulsdon offering plenty of opportunity for spectators to pitch up and watch the vehicles as they pass.
