Cleaning issues are one of the most common reasons for a tenancy deposit dispute. If you want to get your deposit back as a renter, you need to make sure an end-of-tenancy clean is done to a high professional standard.

Below are tips to help give a rental property a good thorough clean and improve the chances of getting a deposit back without calling in the experts or breaking the bank.

Don’t underestimate the task of cleaning a rental property so it’s up to a professional standard. Firstly, allocate a suitable amount to sorting the property and it should be possible.

Tips for a rental deep clean

Plan ahead

Deep cleaning takes longer than a normal spring clean, so make sure you leave yourself enough time. Thinking it will take a few hours? Set aside an entire day to give you time to sort out any unforeseen issues that may arise.

Top through to bottom

It’s a good idea to go top to bottom when doing your deep clean. Start upstairs and go downstairs and go ceiling to floor. While you’re cleaning, any dust will fall from the top to the bottom, meaning you’re cleaning more effectively. You should also save time as you’re not cleaning twice over.

Cupboards and drawers

Check that all cupboards and drawers are empty before cleaning, it will be easier to get rid of any marks left by food or pots and pans. Use dish soap and minimum water as harsh chemicals or lots of water could cause damage.

Defrost and descale

If you had white goods supplied with the property, make sure they are left in the same condition as when you moved in. Thoroughly clean the fridge freezer using disinfectant and unplug it, leave the door open to defrost any ice – you may want to put towels down to protect the floor.

Cautious carpet clean

Be careful when using cleaning products in a rental property, especially if you’re cleaning upholstery. Before using products on carpets or sofas, test them on a small non-visible area first. Some chemicals can cause a reaction, so it’s best to test on a small area before applying products all-over and potentially causing damage that could cost you.

Deep cleaning your property yourself will save you money.

Although you regularly clean your home, landlords will want their property left in immaculate condition, or at least, to the same standard of clean it was when you moved in.

You don’t need fancy equipment to do a deep clean, just allow yourself a good amount of time and plenty of elbow grease.
