Welcome to Sanderstead

Sanderstead is a residential village set in the North Downs. It is located close to Warlingham in the Surrey Hills and is within easy reach of Croydon and central London, making it a desirable place to live for commuters and families alike.

Sanderstead is an ideal choice for commuters, with its leafy residential roads, yet excellent travel links directly into London Victoria and London Bridge from Sanderstead and Purley Oaks mainline stations both in Zone 6.  Nearby tram links are available at Lloyd Park to Croydon and Sanderstead’s proximity to the M25/M23 offers easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports and the south coast.

There are many renowned schools in the vicinity, in both the private and state sectors, including Ridgeway and Atwood Primary schools, Riddlesdown Collegiate, Whitgift, Trinity, Royal Russell, Croydon High and Croham Hurst.

THINGS TO DO

It boasts all the ingredients of a convenient village high street with a pretty pond and grassy area, known locally as ‘The Gruffy,’ which are overlooked by All Saints church, dating back to the 13th century.

You will also find Sanderstead Recreation Ground with its popular children’s playground, running trials, outdoor fitness stations, multi-games court and sports pavilion.

There are plenty of sports clubs, for all ages, offering rugby, football, cricket, tennis, hockey, as well as golf clubs at Purley Downs and Croham Hurst. The surrounding countryside offers places of special interest with Selsdon Nature Reserve, Farthing Downs and several woods for walking.

SHOPS AND EATERIES

Throughout Sanderstead there are several local shopping parades providing a range of independent shops and restaurants.  The main high street offers a great selection of shops including a bakers, barbers, florist, pet shop and opticians as well as a Waitrose supermarket.

In the Elmfield parade you can also find a very popular Butchers and convenience store.

HISTORY

Sanderstead was originally a relatively small village with just 33 homes and 189 inhabitants in 1821.  It was the arrival of the railway and the opening of Sanderstead stations that resulted in a growing population.
