Welcome to Oxted

Nestled at the base of the North Downs in eastern Surrey, Oxted stands as a lively and welcoming town with a rich history dating back to its listing in the Domesday Book of 1086. The town experienced significant growth in 1884 when the railway arrived, marking the beginning of its expansion into the thriving community it is today.  Oxted is both picturesque and highly sought-after as a residential destination. 

Oxted benefits from excellent connectivity. The town is conveniently located under 4 miles from the M25 and some 14 from Gatwick Airport. Oxted has its own station, with a direct link from East Grinstead and London that allows commuters to reach the town in approximately 40 minutes.

There is a diverse range of schools in and near Oxted, offering both state and private education. Some notable options include Oxted School, Hazelwood School, and a bit farther away, Lingfield College.

Oxted seamlessly combines the charm of its historical roots with the modern conveniences of a well-connected and bustling community.

The town's amenities include the very popular Tandridge Leisure Centre which has a well-equipped gym, a swimming pool with a waterslide and a pirate shipwreck, plus a busy programme of exercise classes.

The Barn Theatre is described as ‘Surrey's oldest community theatre and the jewel in Oxted's crown'   The 244 seat auditorium plays host to a wide variety of shows and entertainers.  Not only does it provide a home to various amateur groups it is also a popular venue for comedians, singers and bands as well as touring theatre productions.

Oxted also has its very own Everyman cinema offering a luxury experience for watching the latest flicks.  Set in a beautiful Tudor-fronted building, Everyman Oxted holds three unique cinema screens, with a vibrant bar area featuring original fittings from the 1920s.

Oxted is an interesting town with a host of delightful dining spots and shops.  From fashion and homewares to gifts, there really is a great choice of shops to be explored. Characterised by charming Tudor-style buildings Oxted enjoys a lively community atmosphere.

Master Park in Oxted stands as a meticulously kept and highly frequented park. It serves as a regular venue for football and cricket fixtures, and hosts a range of events throughout the year, such as the Oxted Beer Festival, the annual Pram race, and various boot fairs.

HISTORY

The village, historically centred around agriculture.  It underwent significant changes with the introduction of the railway in the 1880s. This development spurred the construction of houses and villas, particularly in the early 20th century. A new hub emerged around the railway station.  Despite ongoing construction in proximity to the historic centre, the growth has been managed in a way that preserves the area's character and does not compromise the setting of numerous noteworthy buildings

Oxted stands as one of the only towns that proudly maintains its very own brass band. Established in 1901, The Oxted Band boasts a rich history of entertaining audiences and securing accolades across the South East. The brass band remains vibrant, regularly performing at various local events and occasions throughout the year.
