Tips for moving to a new home with pets

Moving home is a lot of work and can be even harder if you have pets to take with you. We hope our tips below will help if you are planning to move with pets.

Let your landlord know

When looking for a new home, you need to make sure that pets are allowed. You don’t want to find your dream home and have to let it go!

Microchip details

If you have microchipped your pet, make sure you add your new address. It is not uncommon for pets to run off when they’ve moved to a new, unfamiliar area. They may even try to find their way back to your old address, so make sure you update their information asap.

Update any insurance policies you have for your pets, and if you have moved far away you will need to register at a new vet.

Keep your pet calm

Moving can be just as stressful for your pets. They don’t understand what is happening, and some won’t cope well with long car journeys. Ensure they have everything they need and are comfortable, pack a familiar blanket and toy for them to travel with.

If you are going some distance, you will need to stop at regular times. Dogs will need to stretch and need toilet breaks.

Once you have arrived at your new home, find a suitable place and set up your pet. Put down their toys and bed and try to create an area they can feel safe in.

Finally, allow your pets to explore, keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t get too excited or nervous and cause damage.
