Always use an agent, says scammed tenants.
Tenants who found property on Gumtree were scammed by fake landlords and have warned others to use an agent.
A couple who found a property a year ago, signed a tenancy agreement and paid a deposit of £1,195. This was despite their unease over the landlord’s behaviour and the fact CCTV cameras were fitted in each room.
Two days prior to the couple and their children moving into the property, the landlord cancelled the agreement. The couple were told their deposit would be returned to them, a year later and they are still waiting.
When the couple looked online, they found the same property was being advertised on Gumtree, by the same man. The couple later found out that another family were scammed and handed over £2,000 to the same man.
