7 Top Tips for Making Moving Home Less Stressful
Moving into a new home is a time of great excitement! However, moving home can also be one of the most stressful events of your life.
You can experience high levels of thrilling anticipation as you look forward to living in your new home, but be equally as stressed out at the thought of packing up and physically moving out of your old home too!
We have all been there. What you think will be a simple ten-minute job of packing up your kitchen cupboards actually turns out to be an all-day job. Sorting out and packing your wardrobe went smoothly, but the thought of clearing the loft is giving you the chills.
No matter how much you are looking forward to settling into your new home, you have to get through the stressful moving process first – so we thought these seven top moving tips would be of help to you:
1: It is normal to feel stressed
First of all, don't stress over feeling 'stressed'. Accept that moving home is a stressful process and that it is normal to feel this way. Try to remember other times that you have been stressed in your life. You got through that OK, right? You can get through this too!
Don't let your stress levels stop you from getting things done. Simply concentrate on packing one box at a time. That's all you need to do. Pack one box, and then the next, and the next...
2: Allow yourself plenty of time
Probably the biggest cause of stress during your move will come from not giving yourself enough time to sort and pack everything you need to take with you. You can make things a lot simpler by allowing yourself enough time to get everything done.
When you have your moving date set, then start by getting rid of any clutter, old clothes and unwanted gadgets that you know you don't need and don't want to take with you when you move. You will need roughly two days of free time to pack up a small flat, around four days for a two-bedroom house, and maybe five or six days for a three-bedroom house.
3: Start with the little things
Don't start moving large heavy furniture until you have cleared them of all your bits and pieces. Start small and work your way outwards, so start with emptying one shelf of a cupboard and eventually the whole thing will be empty and ready to be moved.
4: Keep organised
Make sure that you keep a strip of sticky labels or a marker pen so that you can label each packing box as you finish filling it up. There can be nothing worse than to have a pile of identical plain boxes arrive at your new home and have no idea which room the boxes belong in!
Keep a folder or large envelope wallet to store all of your important house moving documents in. It can be easy to get your house moving paperwork mixed up with your regular documents so they get buried and sealed in a box for your move. Keep them separate and close by should you need them at any point during your move.
5: Don't DIY your move
While it may seem like the easy option to get a bunch of friends together to help you move home, it may end up being very costly in the long run. You should hire a professional moving company to help you because they are exactly that – professional!
They will make your move so much easier, quicker and more stress-free. They will also have the right packing equipment to safely store and transport your goods to your new home. They will also be covered by insurance which means that should something valuable be broken or damaged during the move, their insurance will cover the cost of the repairs or replacement.
6: Ask for help
Although you should leave the actual move of your possessions to the professionals, there is no harm in asking your friends for help with the initial packing and labelling to take some of the pressure off your shoulders.
If you prefer, you could ask for their help with the unpacking in your new home. You can thank them for their help afterwards with a combined house-warming/thank-you party!
7: Don't forget to sleep!
Remember that there is a lot of work to be done, so you need to be on top of your game. This means you need to get plenty of rest and sleep to recharge your batteries and give you a clear mind to focus on your moving tasks each day.
Don't stay up past midnight packing boxes! Go to bed and get a good night's sleep and you will have more energy and clarity of thought to get your packing done quicker the next day.
Make sure that you take care of yourself during your moving period. Allow yourself a night off for an evening out with your friends or a long soak in the bath and an early night. You will feel better for it!
