Welcome to Caterham

Offering a blend of accessibility, local amenities, and transportation options, with seamless access to the M25 Caterham is surrounded by scenic countryside, it's a favoured destination for families seeking the best of both worlds.

The town of Caterham is situated to the south of Croydon and is set amidst the beauty of the Surrey countryside making it a popular location for commuters with its convenient rail service located within Zone 6 with a direct line into London Bridge via East Croydon.  The close proximity to Junction 6 of the M25 provides easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports, as well as the South Coast.

Caterham is a popular place for families due to the excellent nursery, primary and secondary schools, in both the private and state sectors including renowned Caterham School, an Independent co-educational with day and boarding facilities.

THINGS TO DO

Caterham is incredibly well served with exceptional leisure facilities with De Stafford Sport centre and its well-equipped gym, sports courts and full sized swimming pool.   The Arc Community Space with its popular Soft Play, Bistro and extensive programme of arts and education workshops plus a choice of parks, open spaces, and a range of sporting opportunities such as youth football teams, rugby and cricket clubs.  There are also several golf clubs nearby including the award-winning Surrey National in neighbouring Chaldon.

Caterham has several churches including The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Caterham Baptist Church, Caterham United Reformed Church and St Lawrences Ancient Church which dates back to AD 1095.

Caterham is brimming with local events throughout the year. Caterham Festival runs throughout the summer months and includes the celebrated Caterham Food Festival, the Waller Pain charity cycle event, Caterham and District Horticultural Society Spring Show, the annual Caterham Street Party, Carnival and the Last Night of the Festival Proms.

Caterham even has its own theatre, The Miller Centre, which presents a full programme of excellent plays and shows throughout the year. The Soper Hall is yet another venue for local events and hosts the regular Caterham Comedy Club (which has been known to see some fairly big names in the comedy world grace the stage!)

There really is always something to do!

SHOPS & EATERIES

One of Caterham’s charms is its proximity to the countryside but the town also has a metropolitan feel with an array of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The Church Walk Shopping Centre and High Street provides a range of retail chains, as well as independent retailers.

Caterham has a total of three large supermarkets, Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco, as well as several smaller outlets such as Michael Lord, an independent family run butchers.

For a small town Caterham also had a wide selection of shops.  From high street chains WH Smiths, Holland & Barrett & Card Factory to delightful independent shops such as the delightful Lost Sheep gift shop and tea room.

For food and drink you are spoilt for choice.  With several pubs and many restaurants serving a vast range of cuisines whatever your tastes; Thai, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Pan Asian, Japanese -  Caterham has it all!

LOCAL HISTORY

Caterham is divided into two parts, known locally as Caterham Valley and Caterham-on-the-hill.  The station and main shopping centre are located in the Valley whereas the Sports centre and High Street can be found ‘on the hill’.

Caterham has an interesting history being a former army town. The barracks was built as a depot for the Foot Guards regiments in 1877 and became the largest army depot of the Victorian age.  For over a century the Guards Depot played a major part in military history.  Thousands of Grenadiers, Coldstream, Irish and Welsh Guardsmen passed through on their way to various regiments.  The barracks eventually closed in 1995 and was later developed by Linden Homes into a new residential area known as ‘The Village’.  Many of the original buildings were retained and sympathetically converted into family homes.

Caterham is also the original home of the famous Caterham Seven sports car which had a presence in the town from its inception in 1973 up until 2013.

A trip to the East Surrey Museum, located at the bottom of Church Hill in Caterham Valley, is a great way to learn more about the fascinating history of the town and surrounding areas.
